The spiritual dimension of the person is a challenging area for the person-centred practitioner to navigate because it is an expression of that which is beyond thought and beyond ordinary language. Its significance is often dismissed by those who would seek to develop the approach along more secular lines. Yet we know that the spiritual dimension became of increasing importance to Carl Rogers towards the end of his life and he wrote:
"Our experiences, it is clear, involve the transcendent, the indescribable, the spiritual. I am compelled to believe that I, like many others, have underestimated the importance of this mystical, spiritual dimension. (Kirschenbaum and Henderson, 1989, p.138).
In my short presentation I will describe Rogers' own shifting position with regard to the spiritual dimension over his lifetime and briefly consider how his later understanding has been carried forward by others since his death, sometimes helpfully, sometimes unhelpfully. I would also like to consider Eugene Gendlin's little-known work on 'congruence as process', which opens up a different but very compelling person-centred perspective on the process of spiritual development. I look forward to hearing the thoughts and views of Danish colleagues on this topic.

Judy Moore was trained in the person-centred approach in the late 1980s before becoming a trainer on the Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich, UK. For fifteen years she was Director of the UEA Counselling Service and Director of the University's Centre for Counselling Studies. She also taught on UEA's Focusing-Oriented Therapy programme and is now a Certifying Co-ordinator for the Focusing Institute (TIFI), New York.
Recognition of the spiritual dimension of the person was always an important part of the UEA trainings and Judy wrote a chapter on Spirituality and Transcendence for the 3rd edition of the Handbook of Person-Centred Therapy (ed. Gina Di Malta et al., Palgrave Macmillan, 2024). She co-edited (with Nikolaos Kypriotakis) two volumes of Senses of Focusing (Eurasia Publications, 2021), which will shortly be published as an e-book. She lives and works in private practice in Norwich, UK.
